I highly recommend the textbook called "Deutsch Heute". You can choose any of the versions and editions, click HERE or on the image below for the edition from 2015:

 

 

Pretty obvious study aid, but I always recommend flash cards for vocabulary and memorization. I use them myself to study Russian and prepare for my drone certification. You can make your own, or just buy a set of 100 cards for a few dollars:

The Awful German Language

While going through some of my old files I stumbled upon Mark Twain's "The Awful German Language", where he talks about the quirks of the German language and the difficulties of learning it. It is very eloquently written and I had to laugh a lot while reading it. Highly recommend!
